Sonderia is a narrative-based tactics strategy game that revolves around the rule of the Elizos family as they lead a conquest across the titular continent.
The game takes place within the world of Laretta in the year 993. The player starts as Lydia Elizos, first queen of the ruling family. After establishing the country of Vanéra on the northern end of the continent, she looks to the south for expansion.
The player must make consequential choices and executive military decisions to reign victorious and conquer the land, both in the political dance and enemy conflicts. How you rule is defined by your personality and values.
You play as multiple rulers of Sonderia, leading their kingdom’s conquest of the continent through each year of their reign
In a year, you can:
Engage in romance to find a spouse, which leads to the eventual birth of an heir
Socialize with the townsfolk (and get new allies for battle!)
Manage your military and scout neighboring regions
Every five years, you must engage in conflict with enemy nations to progress the story:
Levels are represented in a node map in the main game screen
Approach to conflict is influenced by your stats, known as…
Gameplay in Sonderia revolves around the “ASPIRE” system (Art, Social, Political, Intellect, Religion, and Economics), where your stats are determined by how you decide to rule your kingdom and choices you make in dialogue. For instance, a player that seeks to focus on romance and building relationships with other characters will have a strong Art and Social focus–this will result in a playstyle that revolves around creative negotiation and forging relationships with named allies. On the other hand, a player that puts time into military investment will build upon the Economic stat, in which they invest funds into their battalions to defend Sonderia and build their empire.
Sonderia's combat takes place on a grid map, with units taking turns based on their speed and amount of energy exerted through previous actions. Each unit possesses a static class with unique ability point mechanics and skills. They are obtained through story progression, socializing, and even secret routes...!
The board also features random effect tiles to add further variety to encounters, as well as a negotiation system once you have backed the enemy into a corner. This system is currently under active development and will undergo various balancing passes as playtesting continues!
Thank you for taking the time to read this development diary on Sonderia! This game is the largest project I have ever worked on, and demands thousands of lines of dialogue to be written in addition to combat balancing. Therefore, the project is a long ways away. Keep an eye out, however, for future development updates and playtest releases!
